A major tragedy was narrowly averted at Digha on Wednesday morning after two tourists were swept away by strong tidal currents while bathing in the sea. The incident occurred near the Kshonika Ghat area of New Digha, just two days after a drowning incident had already raised safety concerns at the popular tourist destination.
According to reports, the tourists ventured into the sea during high tide when sudden strong waves pulled them toward deeper waters. Unable to control themselves against the powerful currents, both individuals began to drown, triggering panic along the shoreline as onlookers raised alarm.
Civil defence personnel stationed at the beach responded immediately, with trained divers jumping into the sea without delay. After a strenuous rescue operation amid rough waters, both tourists were successfully brought back to shore, preventing what could have been another fatal incident.
Following the rescue, the tourists were rushed to Digha State General Hospital, where they received primary medical treatment. Doctors later confirmed that both individuals are stable and out of danger, highlighting once again the critical role of rapid emergency response in coastal safety situations.
